Helsinki is a vibrant student city. There are about 70 000 university students in Helsinki – representing more than 10% of the city’s population. About 8 000 of these are international students.

Helsinki is big enough to have everything you may want or need, yet small enough to easily find your way. A rich urban culture, beautiful islands and green parks are all nearby and easily reached with a modern public transport system.

HOUSING OPTIONS
Student dormitories and Student Residence Halls.
Dormitories: flats with 3-8 rooms (every student has a single room) with shared kitchen and bath.
Residence Halls: One-room studio-type flats with kitchen and bath.

COMPARABLE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE FROM ABROAD ALLOWED/NOT ALLOWED
The University of Helsinki does not take insurance policies for the students.
If you are admitted as a student to the University of Helsinki and do not intend to immigrate to Finland on a permanent basis, you should purchase an insurance in your country of permanent residence.
The insurance should cover you at least in a case of an accident and sickness. As a temporary resident in Finland you will receive treatment in hospital in case of emergency, but you will have to cover the expenses yourself. Please contact your local insurance companies for further details on insurances.
Citizens of Third countries
Citizens of third countries arriving in Finland for the purpose of studying are required to have health insurance, if the period of study lasts for more than three months. The requirement is the same for degree-seeking and exchange students.
The type of health insurance policy depends on the duration of studies in Finland, which, in turn, affects the right to domicile in Finland.
- Third-country nationals studying in Finland for less than two years. A student who enters Finland to study for less than two years is not usually granted the right to domicile, i.e. a home municipality in Finland, and therefore is not entitled to municipal health care services. Consequently, the student must have private insurance which covers costs of medical treatment up to 100 000 euros.
- Third-country nationals studying in Finland for at least two years
A student who enters Finland to study for at least two years is usually granted the right to domicile, i.e. a home municipality in Finland and is therefore entitled to municipal health care services. Consequently, the student must have private insurance which covers costs of medical treatment up to 30 000 euros (primarily costs of medicines).

Citizens of Nordic countries
Citizens of Nordic countries do not need the European Health Insurance Card, the ID-card or passport is enough. approximatively 100 € per academic year. 114.50 € per semester
Citizens of EU/EEA Countries
HEALTH FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY
Student health care by Finnish Student Health Care Centre. Please note this health care functions during weekdays between 8 am and 4 pm, and it is not an insurance.

Please note, that the University of Helsinki arranges teaching in periodical teaching system.
